การใช้ has/have to และ must
- ใช้ได้กับประธานทุกชนิดโดยไม่ต้องเปลี่ยนรูป
- ใช้กับสิ่งที่คนพูดคิดว่าสำคัญ ต้องทำ
- ใช้กับ คนอื่นอยากให้เราทำ หรือคิดว่าสำคัญ และใช้กับพวกข้อบังคับ
must กับ have to ไม่ต่างกันเท่าไหร่ แทบจะใช้แทนกันได้ทุกโอกาส ต่างกันตรงความหนักเบาเล็กน้อย ตรงที่ must บังคับมากกว่านิดหน่อยคือ must ใช้ในโอกาสที่คนพูดเห็นความสำคัญคนอื่นอาจไม่เห็นด้วยเท่าไหร่ แต่ have to มักใช้กับการกระทำที่คนอื่นๆก็เห็นว่าสำคัญ คนพูดจะเห็นด้วยหรือไม่เห็นด้วยไม่แน่
เช่น
You have to attend classes to pass the exam. เป็นที่ยอมรับกันว่าต้องไปเรียนถึงจะสอบได้ คนพูดคงเห็นด้วย
You must get on the bus now. คนพูดมีความเห็นว่าต้องขึ้นรถเดี๋ยวนี้ คนอื่นเห็นอย่างไรไม่รู้
คำว่า must มีวิธีใช้อีกอย่างหนึ่ง ใช้แสดงความสำคัญ โดยมากใช้ในเครื่องหมายคำพูด เช่น The movie Suranaree is a "must".

- ใช้แสดงความแน่ใจ ความมั่นใจ สิ่งที่ต้องเกิดขึ้นอย่างหลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้
เช่น Nolan must be in his office by now.
Everything must come to pass.
- ใช้แสดงความมุ่งมั่น ความตั้งใจ
เช่น We must finish this job today.
- ใช้แสดงการบังคับ คำสั่ง
เช่น You must follow the instruction carefully.
-ใช้แสดงการห้ามปราม การเตือนสติ
เช่น You mustn't talk to your elder brother like that.
- ใช้แสดงสภาวการณ์ที่ถูกบังคับให้ทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง
เช่น I must take this class next year.
- เมื่อใช้ในรูปปฏิเสธ เติม not ข้างหลัง must (โดยมีรูปย่อ mustn't)
- เมื่อใช้ในประโยคคำถาม วาง must ไว้หน้าประโยค เช่น Must he do it?

Past Continuous เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิด และ
Past Simple เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เข้ามาแทรก
